This Oreodont skull, dating back 34 million years, comes from a time between the age of dinosaurs and the present day. This period, known as the Oligocene, was home to many strange and unique animals. Oreodonts were burrowing creatures, and their habit of digging underground played a key role in their exceptional preservation. When their burrows collapsed, they were rapidly buried, protecting their remains and allowing fossils like this one to be remarkably well-preserved.
